O.K. - here's the deal. I'm likely going to offend at least a handfull of people with this post, but I really have to get to the bottom of this Harry Potter thing. Would someone please explain to me how it became acceptable to slough off literature in favor of children's books? I mean, I am ALL for the positive effects the Potter collection has made on children. I am eternally grateful to J.K. Rowling and Mary GrandPré for getting thousands of kids to pick up a book instead of slip into a mind-numbing 5 hour session in front of the silly box.
Nonetheless, I find myself on the fence. Part of me is remembering playing card games with wizards and magic, conjuring demons and minions with mana. That side of me wants to say, "Hey, it IS important for adults to have healthy fantasy lives." While the other part of me is sitting in my family physician's office, coughing up tennis ball-sized green chunks of phlegm, waiting for a diagnosis that could or could not require serious medical attention. And that side of me is screaming, "Why the fuck is my Doctor arguing with an orderly over the difficulties Harry and Hermione are faced with when chosing which courses to take for their N.E.W.Ts!?"
Maybe I am being a bit too upset over this whole deal. But the creators of Harry Potter are millionaires now. The kids that read their books probably contributed enough in sales to reach that result. But I guarantee that a ton of people that pay income tax also trucked out their hard-earned cash for their own copies. All things considered, that doesn't really piss me off. If you want Rowling sidling alongside Rushdie on your bookshelf, fine (assuming Rushdie was even there in the first place). But that brings me to sunny point number two on this shit-list.
What really urkes me is when adults have conversations about these books like the characters and scenes that play out therein are deeply and personally meaningful to them. On not less than three occasions I have seen full-blown adults passionately engaging one another in what is obviously stimulating conversation over Harry and Hermione's growing romantic relationship (and yes, I've also been informed that Ron is apparently trying to bone Hermoine presently). Or perhaps Harry's steadfast belief that Draco has been tasked with a specific job by Voldemort (and his continued dispute with Hermione and Ron over that contention). In the course of a single sitting, more is said about Hogwarts than their own jobs or family or children. And it's acceptable! If I had engaged in similar activity before the spawning of this Potter-mania, I would have been ostracized, maybe even had my boxer shorts pulled over my head by some behemoth meandering along after a 5-hour stint at the gym, just for good measure.
Can someone give me a clue? To borrow from Jerry Seinfeld, "What's the deal?"
Forgive me for ranting on this subject, but for fuck's sake, I really needed to get that out. It's been far, far too long now that people I know and (am beginning to) respect (less) have been lumping this drivel in with the likes of literary artists like Joyce and Fitzgerald. There is no comparison. And let's be clear on this point - reading six children's books about a bunch of pre-pubescent, pint-sized, prognosticators does not make a person, "well-read."

I'm not so sure that it's a bad thing even for adults to be standing around the water cooler talking about Harry Potter. Heck, I'll take that any day over the typical cooler talk you hear: Big Brother, American Idol, Fear Factor, Survivor, the Apprentice, etc.

Typically I shy away from anything that gets as popular as the Potter series has gotten. I don't know why, I just don't like to be part of the herd, even if it's something I would like otherwise, which I'll admit is kind of stupid, but it's how I've always been. I've never thought twice about embracing the Harry Potter books though. They are funny, smart, and incredibly well written. They may not be Joyce or Fitzgerald, but I think they've earned the space on my shelf that I've given them.
You've got to be kidding me, right? All the crap going on in the world, and you are begrudging people a little escape? Oh, man!
Yes, I am one of those people who went out to the Harry Potter launch party at midnight, and whose HP collection sits right next to my copies of Kant and Kerouac. Variety is the spice of life! And if you can't allow people a little frivolity once in a while, then what's the point?

I'm not trying to say that people shouldn't be allowed some frivolity or escape. I'm one of those people who enjoys just such deviations from the normal drudgery of day-to-day life. Books are great for that, although many people would rather not stimulate their minds after coming home from their mindless jobs. Either way, that's a person's prerogative.
Like I said in the post, I haven't really bad-mouthed any of the Potter fans in recent years because I was still deciding whether I would eventually join the fold myself. However, after receiving a few emails about the contents of my post, I have decided to retract my earlier statements regarding the benefits of Harry Potter to children.
I am not altogether convinced at this time that reading Harry Potter is beneficial to stimulating children's interest in reading anything other than Harry Potter. (And that, as far as I can tell is not beneficial, inasmuch as just eating macaroni and cheese is not beneficial to one's development of appreciation for other cuisine.)
These books are easy and they are accesible for kids. Nothing I have seen in them even hints at the kind of mental challenges available in other children's novels and literature. Things like subtlety, character development, depth and style are all arguably absent in comparison to works crafted by the likes of C.S. Lewis, or perhaps J.R.R. Tolkien. (Fixing holes left in the plot after book 2 by cementing them away in book 6 does not count as style, nor character development.)
What's next? Am I to believe that "The Hobbit" will one day become acceptible "adult fiction" given this impending lowered standard? We should be encouraging more than simple-mindedness in children; rather than thinly-veiled brand loyalty pawned off to us as "literature."
So, maybe adults SHOULD read these books if for no other reason than to remind themselves that tabloids, while entertaining, are still tabloids.
As for the people who rant and rave about television - that doesn't bother me. People who choose to engage the silly box in hours of ass-mashing can issue forth all the verbal poop they like. Television, in my opinion does not fit into the same category as reading. Little actual effort is required to watch and absorb TV. However, one's mind SHOULD be engaged and stimulated by reading. So, on the subject of TV conversation around the water cooler, forgive me but I'm going to punt on that one for now. Maybe that will be addressed in a future post, as I do have a healthy distaste for the silly box.

I'm a big Palahniuk fan myself, so the reference is not lost here. But all things considered, with all the problems in this world and the turmoil and strife everywhere, there are still solutions and answers. And they damn sure are not in any of the pages of Harry Potter. And even if they are, I don't want to hear them from a whining pansy like Harry, having somehow pulled those shining nuggets of wisdom out of his bespectacled posterior.
People should be concerned with global issues more today than ever. The world is smaller now. I don't think any of us are going different directions on the materialism street, but materialism is not enough to justify such large-scale apathy. In my opinion, Potter-mania (notice, I am distinguishing here from the books themselves) fits neatly into the materialistic, apathetic realm, not the healthy fantasy life and "escape from reality" realm.
If you buy a book, you buy a paperweight until you open it up and read.
If you buy a cape and a wand to wear while waiting in line at the midnight release party for the newest book, you have decided to engage in a healthy fantasy lifestlye.
If you scrutinize the text of these books for meaning, combing each passage for minute details, and then communicate your findings to others, engaging them in what you believe to be intellectual conversation, you have wasted both your own valuable time and that of others that could have been spent doing something worthwhile; like writing a blog about how you despise Harry Potter, or taking a dump (now there's some release!).
Slow your roll, dude. Pardon me for asking, as it has not been made clear in your post or comments, but shall I assume you have not yet partaken in any part of the Harry Potter series? If this were the case, you certainly wouldn't be expounding on it's complete lack of value to readers, regardless of age group. Also, if you hadn't read a word of the series thus far, I'm certain you wouldn't find yourself in a position to criticize "character development" or "depth and style."
I find myself hard pressed to defend Rowling's work (and its global success) to someone that has not enjoyed, what I consider to be, a stimulating, enjoyable, if simple, series of adventure stories.
When I was a young lad my favorite series included Encyclopedia Brown, Choose Your Onw Adventure, Scary Stories To Tell in the Dark, and various other books available to me at the Crowley Public Library. Was I, perhaps, robbing myself of some important literary experience by not trudging through Chaucer or Melville at the tender age of nine? Perhaps because I wasn't devouring Joyce and Fitzgerald I was selling myself short and dooming myself to a life of swilling PBR and scratching my junk through my BVDs on the porch of my trailer.
This "unexamined life" crap isn't going to get you anywhere, especially not using Harry Potter as ammo. I love the Harry Potter series, as do many of the most intelligent people I know, including my best friend and my wife.
My suggestion is that we pick up this discussion after you've read the books, I think they will provide a rather important perspective.
It's exactly that perspective that I choose to avoid. I never boasted an encyclopedic knowledge of anything written by Rowling. Nor do I begin to see how a trip to my local library should be spent pouring over her works, since it goes without saying that I am not going to buy any of them.
My opinions (and they are just that) are based on my own research. Opinions that are not my own are welcome, of course. But I will not engage in precisely the activity I find offensive to my senses merely to satisfy a debate. If my opinions include factual errors, I invite anyone to point them out. I am perfectly capable of admitting when I've made incorrect statements.
As for defending Rowling's work, in case you haven't noticed, Scott, you most certainly are defending it. Anyone can post here and this discussion will continue as long as people (including myself) choose to do so (which, as far as I'm concerned, is fine - whether discussion ends here or endures for weeks.)

I'm not trying to prove that kids should be beaten for reading Harry Potter when a perfectly good copy of "Gravity's Rainbow" is sitting nearby. I admit that my rancor for Harry Potter may be based on sources other than complete knowledge of the books themselves. However, for that reason alone, my ability to converse on them does not become moot. I will assume that you were not present at Alesia to see Vercingetorix meet Caesar, but I'm sure you could, with a little research, have a wonderully informed conversation on that topic.
I knew that this was a sensitive subject, which is why I made the disclaimers on the post. Again, I'm not trying to flame anyone in particular. If anything, I am trying to understand Potter-mania; or this fad or whatever it is, for its value, if any.
I do think that it's a good point that a critique of "character developement" and "depth of style" cannot be an accurate critique having never read the novels. Research into Alesia, Vercingetorix, Caesar, and any other number of historical events and persons is the ONLY perspective anyone can have when so removed from those people and events. We can only guess and pontificate about the motivations of people in given situations throughout history, but we can't be any more right about that than we can when guessing about someone's motivation when doing anything at any time, like listening to audiobooks for example.
I'll never be able to write a decent review of Kurosawa's Yojimbo until I've watched it. Then I can rattle on about what a bad-ass Toshiro Mifune is, but until then I only know what a bumbling, funny young hot-shot he was in the Seven Samurai.

First of all, without having read the books, I'm not sure that you can accurately make the above statement. Second, Joyce and Fitzgerald were writing years ago, so why haven't their books solved the world's problems yet? From your statement I can only gather that while the answers are not in Harry Potter novels, they must be elsewhere, such as in the pages of the works by the authors you mentioned previously.
I don't know, it just feels like your thoughts and opinions about the novels are based solely on the fact that you're tired of hearing about Harry Potter all the time, the way that I'm tired of hearing about reality television all the time. And just like I'm never going to give reality TV a fair chance, even if you were to read the books at this point, I'm sure you wouldn't enjoy them regardless of their merit. It sounds like your mind is made up, and in that case what's the point of this little debate?
Correct - o - mundo on the Vercingetorix thing. We're so removed from those events that history really is the only way to gain any perspective thereon. That is the intended effect I wish to achive for myself with respect to these books.

As for your last statement, you are correct again. I am tired of hearing about Harry Potter much in the same way you are tired of hearing about reality TV. It has become soap opera talk to me. If it would be about TV, that would be fine, but as an avid reader, I feel like Potter-mania has invaded literature and set up camp as if it has always belonged there rightfully. I am the previously alluded to e-mail responder. Not knowing proper blog response ediquitte I sent my reply directly to the source but have since found the need to go public.
I, unlike the originator of this discussion, read all the books this summer (they go by pretty quick) and I am not convinced that they are making children read anymore than they did before based on the fact that, my younger siblings excluded, all of the people (kids and young adults)that I know who have read the books have never read any other books. They are the ones who got through high school english on CLifff's notes alone and only plan to re-read the 'Arry Potter series over and over again each time a new one is about to drop. I know these things because I am now an honorary member of the club and as such it appears that I am required to discuss in detail various aspects of the books with the people I borrowed them from. This is not to say that well read individuals don't read Harry Potter, I just don't know any. Come to think of it I can't say that I know many other well read individuals period (present company excluded).
No one I have spoken with seems to share my opinions either. My most unforgiveable opinion is that I do not like the hero of these books. Harry is a self-pitying, whining, reckless little shit. I found myself wanting to pull for him because you are supposed to, he has a crappy home life and oscillates between being admired and loathed by everyone. But through it all I wanted him to be a better person and display better decision making skills. Granted his proclivty for adventure and rule breaking usually saves the day, but I don't like him becoming a role model for kids.
My next trespass is that each of these books is written like you are watching a movie, a kids movie, there is no deeper meaning or underlying themes. There is nothing else to think about or to discuss and any adult telling you otherwise is giving too much credit to Ms. Rowling as some sort of literary figure.
That being said, I liked the books, I was entertained, much in the same way I was as a kid reading a copy of Superfudge (from the Crowley Public Library). Harry sucks but many of the other characters made it interesting. I'll never read them again and I promise that I am not going to lose any sleep wondering how Snape could fool Dumbledore all those years, or whether Ron will be giving Hermione the old in-out-in-out any time soon but I will read the next installment and probably enjoy seeing how she will end this thing.
By the way, I am no blogger but I do enjoy the posts when I have the time. I haven't spoken to a few of you in years and its fun to check in.

What I find particularly amusing about this “debate” is that the breadth and depth of the Harry Potter series justifies neither this rancor or defense. What I want you to admit, Jared, is that you hate “Potter-mania,” not the Potter books. After you’ve read them, feel free to expound on them as garbage until your blue in the fingertip. Hating a book you’ve never read is like hating a movie you’ve never seen, it’s just as accessible a media and requires you partake before you poo-poo.
I enjoy the Potter books, but I get my subtext and character and depth from Murakami, Lethem, McMurtry, Westlake, Card, Gaiman and countless other authors. I’ll take Rowling in my hammock on a sunny Sunday afternoon at 4 ½ pages a minute. It’s like a weekly comic strip or a monthly serial you might get in the mail, it’s just escapist adventure that I greatly enjoy, like a fluffer-nutter sandwich: tasty, smooth, easy to digest and completely devoid of meaningful ingredient. But it’s YOUNG ADULT FICTION, after all, isn’t it?
As for Potter’s effect on kinds, I’ll remain all but silent. I don’t know anything about kids, but I do know that if someone (kid or not) doesn’t want to read, they just won’t. I met a guy once, age 26, who read the first books of his life only three weeks before and it the operations manual for his new engineering job.
I’m certain, however, the Potter books have introduced a few kids to a hobby they would have picked up later in life anyway. I like fluffler-nutter sandwiches, and I’ll continue to eat them when I feel the desire, but I won’t be buying fluffer-nutter Christmas ornaments, backpacks, lunchboxes, book ends, scotch tape, or sexual devices any time soon.

The books merely spawned this Potter-mania. It's kind of like guilt by association. I don't actually hate books. They're books, after all. I absolutely love books. And not having read all of these (I didn't even make it through the first few chapters of a borrowed copy of the first one), I can't for practical purposes hate them for their existence.
But if you insist that I cannot form valid opinions from outside sources, other than the books themselves, I must take exception to that knd of logic. I feel I have been clear on why I do not find it necessary to confine my contributions to this conversation to subject matter obtained solely from reading these books.
If at some later date and time I do decide to read any Harry Potter novels, that decision will be my own and not yours to make. And no amount of coaxing will change that. If you find it necessary to attempt to derail the substance of the discussion by discrediting me, perhaps you should refer to some of my arguments before typing next time.
Many of my feelings are expressions of frustrated curiosity, not with respect to the books, but of the trend and its effects. As a reader, I am concerned (and conflicted). And while you may dismiss this trend as fluff, can you recall anything in recent history that has spawned such a mania in the reading public? Both affecting children and adults alike?

I agree, Classical music IS the only music of value to society. I listen to nothing but J.S. Bach (harpsichord was obviously the instrumental pinnacle of musical expression) all day long while peering through my monocle at The Divine Comedy, in latin of course (because latin is the only pure language), sipping Earl Grey tea (and only that flavor, as it is superior in all respects to any other; in fact all other tea trees and leaves should be torched in lieu of this observation) and chuckling to myself quietly, wondering what all the plebes are doing today while I am being enriched by the most beneficial, enthralling, and stimulating of all things the world has to offer. I also occasionally soil myself.
